Paul is a tour guide in Portumna Castle. I complemented him on what a great job has been done with the castle and he began talking about what it was like before the OPW (Office of Public Works) began working on it. There was a tree growing right up the middle of the ruins before they started renovation. During renovation they found the skeleton of a dog which, on inspection, had died of a broken back. This skeleton proved an old wives tale that a child in the house had fallen from one of the upper stories and survived when its fall was cushioned by the family pet. Paul is a lovely gentleman and his interested in local history is obvious when he talks.
